At roughly 2.40pm today I was cycling in Edinburgh, heading south on Gilmerton Road. The bottom of Gilmerton Road is down to one lane with temporary traffic lights just now, and UK Mail van FL08 KNG was behind me in the queue at the lights. When the lights changed to green, the queue started to move. The road was uneven, strewn with roadworks debris, and narrow, and I did not believe that there was space for the van to overtake me safely so I stayed in the centre of the lane to prevent him from trying. He did not like this and chose to stick as close behind me as he could, revving his engine and behaving aggressively. Once we'd got out of the roadworks, I stayed wide to pass a stopped bus, and then to avoid being in the "door zone" of parked cars. I have no desire to be hit by a car door opening unexpectedly so I was well outside the door range, as advised in the Highway Code and as dictated by common sense. The driver of your van did not like that either and continued to rev his engine and drive aggressively close to me. Once there was space for him to pass, he passed at speed and too closely, and the passenger in the van took the opportunity to yell abuse at me. Once the van was past me it turned left into Glenallan Drive (I think). I reckon my presence delayed it by about 45 seconds.
I commend the driver and his passenger on their commitment to Drive Like An Arsehole Day and I will bear it in mind when choosing a mail delivery company in the future, or when purchasing from companies who deliver via courier services.
