What is Raging Bike? Whenever we jump into our cars and start the engine we are polluting our environment. This is particularly true for short urban journeys that combine cold starts with stop/start driving. On the other hand if you jump on your bike to make the same journey you are saving the environment and improving your own and others health.
Raging Bike is an Internet site dedicated to environmental change by increasing the number of people who travel to work by bike.
What does it do?
Raging Bike measures individual cyclists contribution to the environment, the money they save and the calories they burn, by choosing to cycle rather than taking a car or bus.
How does it work? These figures are aggregated for all users of the site and we generate a rolling site total. Using the data from your profile we have measured nine emissions that you will save by cycling rather than using the car/bus/train to get to work. The emissions are listed below: Carbon dioxide: (CO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Non Methane Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), NOx nitrogen oxides., Benzene, 1,3-Butadiene, CH4 Methane, N2O Nitrous oxide (N2O), PM10 Particulates.
Each registered user gets a personal profile. After specifying some demographic data, users enter their miles travelled and the system does the rest, calculating personal contributions on an on-going basis.
Where does your data come from?
Our data is derived and calculated from a range of sources including the UK Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions and Vehicle Certification Agency as well as from several EU studies including the MEET project.
Emission data is not an exact science and with increased car usage and improved motor technologies the goalposts change weekly. Our data will continue to be updated as car technology changes and car use increases.
We always welcome comment and input from new studies.
What is a rage incident?
As bike commuters for many years, we got sick of car drivers cutting us up, using bike lanes, general abuse, and the treatment of cyclists as second class road users. When we got to work we would find that venting our frustration to our colleagues (in the main car drivers) provoked little sympathy. Hence the rage corner were devised as a harmless catharthis for our fury. Please post your experiences!
What are the league tables?
The cyclists we know have discussions about whether certain car owners are worse than others. Likewise are certain road junctions, road networks worse than others? We thought some empirical evidence was required. We hope to present the years offending manufacturers with an RB award. (contrary to rumour it is not true we have 3 prizes made out to Volvo already.)
How does Raging Bike make money?
We introduce our emission measurement systems to companies and organisations that want to commit to a greener transport policy
